Abstract

Thirty years ago, India had one television station. Over the past decade, a boom in the country’s media industry led to the launch of several hundred channels. Today, there are more than 800. According to the “2013 India Digital Future in Focus” report, India has 73.9 million home and work Internet users and an extended online audience in excess of 145 million, as of March 31, 2013 Visual media and internet together are, indeed, the last word in entertainment and enlightenment. It can enlighten our illiterate and ignorant masses; it can widen their mental horizon and help them to rise above communalism, racialism, regionalism etc; it can promote international understanding; and it can generate a healthy climate for peaceful co-existence. But in the hands of incompetent people, it can damage public morals, it can breed religious fanaticism; and it can vitiate international atmosphere and even precipitate a war. We live in times wherein our life styles are influenced by Medias of all kinds. ‘Informed’ citizens or individuals can contribute to ‘informed’ civil society The Cyber space of this sub continent is distinctly different from the west in its content, presentation and focus despite it is owned by elite and affluent social class. Research studies have pointed out that perceptions of the wired messages, images and ideas shape the entire social system. The present out reach of virtual media has created awareness and appreciation of the socio-cultural ethos of our different regions. It played an important role in providing a common denominator to multi-lingual, multi racial society which led to certain uniformity in societal reaction to situations or events, and in developing common response in personal and social communication, enabling towards appreciation of people with diverse beliefs and life styles. This paper examines certain content and quality in the virtual media –social issues, conflicts education and sustainable development, in the context of fundamental ethical issues that keep the human rights of citizens in the multi cultural society. This paper is based on personal notes, discussions with various segments of the cyber space and reference materials and articles written on this area
